Why This Deadline Lands Harder Than the Previous Ones
Shopify retired the legacy checkout in stages: the main pages moved off checkout.liquid in August 2024, Plus stores upgraded Thank You and Order Status by August 28, 2025, and Shopify Scripts stopped on June 30, 2026. August 26, 2026 is the stage for Basic, Grow, and Advanced, and it reaches the largest group of merchants and the smallest share with a developer on retainer.
- There is no opt-out. Stores that have not upgraded are upgraded automatically on the date.
- Customizations are removed, not preserved. The upgrade does not translate old code into the new framework.
- Official Shopify channel apps may carry over. Anything pasted in by hand does not.
If the last person who touched your checkout was an agency you no longer work with, treat that as a red flag.
What Actually Goes Silent
None of this produces an error a customer would notice, which is why it is expensive.
- Ad platform conversion tracking. Campaigns keep spending while reported conversions stop, so return on ad spend reads near zero.
- Tag manager containers. Heatmaps, survey tools, and affiliate postbacks loaded through them go with the container.
- Post-purchase upsells. Thank You page offers wired through pasted script stop rendering.
- Custom fields and Order Status content. Delivery instructions, purchase order numbers, and cash on delivery confirmations.
- Undocumented additions. Anything a previous agency added and never wrote down.
The first to notice is usually the accountant, weeks later, asking why paid revenue collapsed while orders held steady.
The Canadian Layer Most Checklists Skip
Generic migration guides stop at pixels. Canadian stores carry four more items on these two pages.
- French post-purchase content. If a script injected French confirmation text or bilingual delivery notes for Quebec buyers, it must return through an extension, in French of equal quality.
- Provincial tax presentation. Scripts that printed GST, HST, and PST breakdowns or a business number on Order Status disappear with the rest.
- Cross-border messaging. Duty and brokerage notices for United States shipments often lived in the same box.
- Consent handling. Rebuilding tracking through Customer Events is the moment to align with Quebec Law 25 and PIPEDA, not to re-paste a pixel that never respected a consent signal.
Rebuilding tracking without rebuilding consent moves an old compliance gap into a new framework.
The One Hour Audit
Do this before August 26 if you can, immediately after if you cannot.
- Open the upgrade guide. In Settings, then Checkout, expand the upgrade notice to reach your personalised guide.
- Save the scripts. Copy every line out of Additional Scripts into a document. After the deadline that field is inaccessible.
- Map the apps. List the apps that touch Thank You and Order Status and check which offer a compatible extension.
- List the reporting tools. Note every advertising and analytics tool that reports checkout conversions.
- Record a baseline. Conversions, revenue, and return on ad spend per channel for the two weeks before.
The baseline is the step people skip and the only thing that later proves the rebuild worked.
If the Deadline Has Already Passed
The removal is not reversible, so recovery runs in order of money rather than effort. Rebuild advertising tracking first: native channel integrations where they exist, Web Pixels under Customer Events where they do not. Restore post-purchase revenue second, through app extensions in the Checkout and Accounts editor. Content and compliance items come third. Then place a real order, not a preview, and confirm each event reaches the platform meant to receive it.
One step is worth doing even after everything works again: annotate the gap in your reporting, because an unlabelled hole in attribution reads as falling demand in a fourth quarter budget review. Binary Future is a Shopify Plus Partner agency in Toronto, and we run this recovery with provincial tax presentation, Quebec bilingual requirements, and consent handling inside the test plan.
