What Actually Stopped Working on June 30, 2026
Scripts were a Plus-only feature that ran Ruby against the cart and checkout, carrying rules that native settings could not express. The Script Editor stopped accepting edits on April 15, 2026, so many teams had been running frozen code for months before the shutdown.
- Tiered and volume discounts. Cart rules now return full price with no visible sign of failure.
- Customer tag pricing. Wholesale and VIP buyers see retail prices at checkout.
- Shipping rate logic. Free shipping thresholds and oversized surcharges fall back to the base rate table.
- Payment method gating. Methods that should be hidden or shown by cart contents stop being filtered.
A deactivated Script raises no error and appears in no log a merchant reads daily. Some stores undercharge shipping on every order, others quietly bleed wholesale accounts.
How to Confirm a Dead Script Is Costing You Money
A vague brief produces a vague quote. Work through this first.
- Compare the orders. Set May and June 2026 against July and August on average discount, shipping revenue, and payment method mix. A step change around July 1 is your evidence.
- Recover the logic. Look in your repository, your previous agency handover, or the ticket where the rule was requested.
- Test representative carts. A wholesale account, a large quantity order, an oversized item, a Quebec address, a US address.
- Read the support queue. From July onward, buyers describe the symptom before finance sees it in a report.
- Rank by revenue exposure. Not by effort.
The output is a ranked list with a dollar figure on each line, the only brief that earns an honest estimate.
Which Rules Become a Function, and Which Belong in an App
Functions compile to WebAssembly and run inside Shopify infrastructure under strict execution limits. They ship as apps rather than as code in the admin, and that decides your options: custom apps containing Function APIs require Shopify Plus, while public apps from the Shopify App Store work on any plan.
| Original Script rule | Where it goes in 2026 | Constraint to check first |
| Volume and tiered discounts | Discount Function in a custom app | Requires Shopify Plus |
| Customer tag pricing | Native B2B catalogs first | Three catalogs on non Plus plans, assigned via Markets |
| Shipping rules and surcharges | Delivery customization Function | Runs after rates are returned |
| Payment method visibility | Payment customization Function | Can hide or reorder methods, cannot create one |
| Checkout messaging | Checkout UI extension or Checkout Components | Components generally available on Plus since June 2026 |
The third column is where budgets are won or lost. Anyone quoting before asking which plan you are on is guessing.
What Canadian Merchants Should Re-check Beyond Discounts
Provincial rules and bilingual obligations make part of this work specific to Canada.
- Provincial shipping. Rules for the territories, remote postal codes, or oversized freight in Ontario and Quebec usually lived in a Script.
- Tax interaction. GST, HST, and PST are calculated on the discounted amount, so a discount that no longer fires changed the tax collected on affected orders. Reconcile July and August with your accountant.
- French checkout content. Messages a Script injected must return through the supported extension path, in French of equal quality if you sell into Quebec.
- Dual currency. Verify that the free shipping threshold still reads correctly in CAD and in USD.
A discount rule stops being only a discount rule the moment tax, currency, and language sit on top of it.
How to Scope the Rebuild and Choose a Partner
Bring the ranked list from your audit and state your plan tier. Expect a written mapping of each rule to a specific Function API before any code, testing on a development store, and handover of the repository and app ownership at the end. Two answers should end the conversation early: a fixed price quoted before the audit exists, and a promise to convert Scripts automatically.
Binary Future is a Shopify Plus Partner agency in Toronto. We start with your order data and keep provincial tax, Quebec bilingual requirements, and CAD and USD presentation inside the test plan. For a mid market store, expect weeks rather than days once scoping, testing, and a monitored cutover are included. That is an estimated range from our practice, not a quote.
