Shopify Markets and Multi-Store: Two Ways to Go International

Effective international selling starts with the right architecture, and Shopify offers two approaches that solve different problems.

Shopify Markets: Centralized Localization Management

Markets manages localisation from one admin instead of a separate integration per country: local currency display, region-specific product text and meta tags, and market-level pricing. For most brands entering their second or third country, this is the correct starting point because it adds a market rather than a store.

One planning note that most guides written before 2026 miss. Market allowances now scale with plan rather than being effectively open, and contextual checkout and contextual storefront experiences begin at Advanced. Which tier you need before expanding is worked through in Shopify Plus vs Shopify, and current plan pricing is on Shopify’s pricing page.

Multi-Store Strategy: When Complete Store Independence Is Necessary

Separate storefronts make sense when a brand needs a different assortment, different branding, or a different model per region, for example a B2B portal for Europe alongside a DTC storefront for Asia. Expansion stores are included on Plus and managed from one organisation, and this remains the clearest capability that cannot be replicated below Plus. What it costs in practice is broken down in Shopify Plus multi-store setup cost in Canada.

One correction to older guides on this point: per-store custom pricing logic now runs on Shopify Functions, not Shopify Scripts, which stopped executing on June 30, 2026.

This is the section that changed most since this article was first written, and the change is not a Shopify one.

The De Minimis Change and What It Means for Canadian Sellers

On August 29, 2025 the United States suspended the 800 USD de minimis exemption for all countries, so shipments from Canada into the US became dutiable regardless of value (PwC Canada). The suspension was continued by executive order in February 2026 and made indefinite by regulation in June 2026, with a statutory repeal already legislated to take effect on July 1, 2027. For planning purposes it is permanent.

The Canadian-specific nuance matters more than the headline. CUSMA preferential treatment still exists for qualifying Canadian-origin goods with a proper claim of origin, but Canada Post has confirmed that goods sent through the postal stream are tariffed regardless of CUSMA eligibility, while commercial couriers such as UPS, FedEx, and DHL can still apply the exemption (CFIB). For a Canadian brand with meaningful US revenue, carrier choice is now a margin decision rather than a logistics preference.

Automation of International Duties and Taxes

Shopify calculates and collects duties and import taxes at checkout, which is what makes a Delivered Duty Paid model workable. Two years ago that was a conversion optimisation. Now it is the difference between a completed order and a parcel refused at the door, because a US customer who was not shown the duty at checkout finds out about it from the carrier.

For Canadian sellers the tax picture runs both ways: GST, HST, PST, and QST domestically, US state sales tax where nexus applies, and VAT for EU buyers. Rates and thresholds move, so treat any figure in an article, including this one, as a prompt to check rather than a number to build on.

Shopify Payments and Local Payment Methods

Accepting the payment method a market actually uses is one of the cheapest conversion gains available in expansion, and one of the most frequently skipped. iDEAL in the Netherlands, Klarna across the Nordics, and Interac at home are not preferences, they are expectations. Shopify Payments covers the major international methods, and third-party gateways can be added where a region requires one.

Logistics and Customer Service: Seamless Fulfillment

International Fulfillment and Inventory Management

Multi-warehouse inventory management decides both delivery speed and shipping cost, and Shopify Flow can route an order to the closest warehouse with available stock. The harder part is not the routing rule. It is that inventory levels have to be accurate across warehouses in real time, and where stock actually lives in an ERP or WMS, that is an integration project rather than a Shopify setting. That work sits in Shopify CRM and ERP integrations.

Localized Customer Service and Language

Support in the buyer’s language is the part of expansion that gets underfunded most reliably. CRM integration lets agents see localised customer and order data across storefronts, and multilingual content covers the storefront, but neither answers an email. Budget for the humans, or for the hours a partner will spend covering the time zone.

Technical Flexibility and Speed for Global SEO

Headless Architecture and Page Speed

Hosting a custom storefront on a global CDN reduces latency for buyers far from your origin, which is the strongest technical argument for headless in an international context. Judge it on field data rather than on a lab score: Google grades Core Web Vitals from real Chrome users at the 75th percentile, with LCP under 2.5 seconds, INP under 200 milliseconds, and CLS under 0.1. How that plays out is covered in headless commerce and Shopify UX, and the stack itself in the headless toolkit for 2026. Where the constraint is genuinely the frontend, Shopify headless development is the scope.

Hreflang and URL Canonicalization

Regional versions of the same page compete with each other unless hreflang and canonical tags tell Google which version belongs to which market. This is unglamorous and it is also where most international SEO problems on Shopify originate. Get it right before spending on regional content, because duplicate content across markets wastes both the content budget and the crawl.

What Expansion Actually Requires Now

The platform work is largely solved. Markets, duty automation, multi-warehouse routing, and hreflang are configuration and integration rather than invention. What is not solved is the commercial question underneath: whether the landed cost of your product still clears a margin in the target market now that the border costs money. Answer that first, then build. Where the constraint is the platform tier rather than the maths, Shopify Plus development is the scope, and the
