Business Automation on Shopify Plus: When the System Thinks Instead of the Team

The automation prediction largely held, with one correction. Flow, Launchpad, and Functions do let brands build business processes without a developer for each change, but Flow is available broadly rather than being a Plus exclusive, so automation on its own is a weak argument for the tier.

What changed this year is where automation lives. Next Gen Events rebuilt Shopify’s webhook system with field-level filtering and customisable payloads, and Static Apps let a small custom app run without a server you host (Shopify, June 17, 2026). Together they lowered the recurring cost of owning automation rather than renting it, which is the argument covered in build or buy for custom apps.

Headless Shopify Plus: Next-Generation UX

This is the prediction that did not hold, and it is worth saying so plainly. In February the expectation was that headless would become standard on Plus. It did not.

Shopify invested in the opposite direction. Block-based themes moved most layout work into the editor on every plan, which removed a large share of what brands used to go headless for. At the same time Shopify rebuilt Hydrogen as a framework-agnostic toolkit rather than a Remix-tied framework, so headless became easier to adopt and needed less often. The current picture is in the headless toolkit for 2026.

The revised version of the claim: headless is now a choice about where your constraint sits, not a direction of travel everyone is on.

Scaling and Performance on Shopify Plus: Speed, Stability, and Profitability

Speed still translates into profit, but it is worth being precise about how it is measured, because most claims in this space are lab numbers presented as outcomes.

Google grades page experience on field data from real Chrome users at the 75th percentile over 28 days: Largest Contentful Paint under 2.5 seconds, Interaction to Next Paint under 200 milliseconds, and Cumulative Layout Shift under 0.1, with all three required at once. Interaction to Next Paint replaced First Input Delay in March 2024 and is the metric most stores fail, because it measures responsiveness rather than load time.

Treat percentage improvements quoted without a measurement window and a baseline as marketing rather than evidence, including any you are shown in a pitch.

Global Expansion on Shopify Plus: Localization Without Borders

The localisation tooling improved as expected. The commercial context did not. Market allowances now scale with plan rather than being effectively open, and contextual checkout and storefront experiences start at Advanced, so international reach became a plan-level budget line rather than a configuration choice.

The larger change was outside Shopify entirely. The United States suspended its de minimis exemption on August 29, 2025 and made the suspension indefinite by regulation in June 2026, with statutory repeal legislated for July 1, 2027. For a Canadian brand selling into the US, the border now costs money on every parcel, and landed cost has to be shown at checkout rather than discovered at the door. What that means in practice is in Shopify Plus global expansion.

Shopify Plus Security and Sustainability: Technologies Trusted by Brands

Shopify handles PCI compliance, hosting, and certificate management across all plans, which is the same infrastructure regardless of tier. What changed in 2026 is the identity layer rather than the security posture.

Legacy customer accounts were deprecated on February 26, 2026, with a final sunset date still to be announced (Shopify changelog). The replacement uses one-time codes instead of passwords and supports store credit, self-serve returns, and B2B natively. Multipass is not supported on it, so any store with shared sign-in between a custom frontend and checkout has a redesign ahead rather than a toggle.

Treat uptime figures quoted in proposals with the same scepticism as conversion percentages. The number that matters to a merchant is not the platform’s availability but whether their own integrations fail silently, which is an operations question.

Data, Analytics, and Artificial Intelligence in Shopify Plus

This is where 2026 delivered more than February expected. Shopify Catalog now syndicates eligible products to ChatGPT, Copilot, and the Shop app by default, and Agentic Storefronts in the admin report the orders arriving from AI assistants along with the queries a store does not rank for (Shopify, June 17, 2026).

The practical implication is unglamorous and applies to every plan: product data completeness is now an acquisition variable. Thin titles and missing specifications decide whether an assistant recommends you or a competitor, and no amount of frontend work compensates for a catalogue an assistant cannot read.

Future-Proofing: How Brands Can Prepare for the Rest of 2026

Four things worth doing before the year ends, in order of deadline.

  • Confirm the checkout upgrade is done. If your store is not on Plus, this is the August 26 deadline, and for many readers it will already be behind them.
  • Confirm nothing still depends on Scripts. They stopped executing on June 30. Discount rules that quietly stopped applying do not raise an error.
  • Check your account model and app stack against December 1. Returns, exchanges, and subscription apps offering buyer-facing self-service must authenticate through the Customer Account API or lose Built for Shopify status. An app that loses its badge is a signal to review.
  • Audit product data for the AI channels. Completeness rather than volume. The cheapest work on the list and the one nobody schedules.

Keeping that calendar under control is an operations function rather than a project, which is what ongoing Shopify maintenance and support covers, and where an off-the-shelf app cannot meet a dated requirement, custom Shopify app development is the alternative. Where the constraint is genuinely the platform tier, Shopify Plus development is the scope. What last year’s changes turned into is in our 2025 review, checked against 2026.
